You'll often hear on social media that pilots say they regret not joining a flying club...why is this?
Flying clubs provide a cost-effective and straightforward means of learning to fly and renting aircraft for personal use. While they may appear to operate like a flight school and many members may be learning to fly, the difference is that you become a member of the club instead of just being a student.
You typically pay an initial membership fee and then an ongoing monthly due - these help cover costs such as hangar/facility rent, aircraft insurance, and maintenance. In spreading these high fixed costs across many members, it brings down the cost of renting the aircraft substantially - and as a member you benefit from cheaper aircraft rental costs.
Flight schools have flight instructors on staff to provide training, where flying clubs do not directly provide the instructors. Instead, flying clubs typically have instructors who have been "checked out" in the club aircraft and are approved to provide flight instruction to other club members. The benefits of this arrangement include typically lower instruction rates and the instructors control the training process.
If you join a flying club to train for your private pilot certificate, or any other certificate/rating - you'll be taking the exact same checkride to the same standards as a flight school student, and often times with the same examiner, but at a lower total training cost.
The flying club concept has been around for a very long time and there are many thriving clubs all over the US and the world. Being a member of a flying club also provides a community of like-minded individuals with the benefits of social networking and events that flight schools can't match. If you're looking to fly and join a community of aviators, its worth looking into club membership.
